Craigieburn Falcons winning first season

Craigieburn Falcons will come out winners on Saturday no matter the result is in the Hockey Victoria Men’s metro B north grand final.

Fielding teams for the first time, the Falcons two men’s teams will face each other in that grand final.

The Falcons top side went through the season undefeated, while their second team lost just one match.

Falcons committee member Sikander Sharma said they didn’t expect when they formed the club to have both teams in the grand final.

“It is a great feeling to the club in it’s first year,” he said.

“When we entered the competition, we couldn’t enter teams any higher divisions, so they were in the same division.

“We had some good players and expected our top side to finish high, but we didn’t expect the second team to make the grand final.”

Sharma said the second team had really worked hard in to improve during the season to get to where they are at this point.

Sharma said while all the men’s players were friends off field, it would be game on come Saturday.

The Falcons men’s sides aren’t the only ones to make finals.

Their women’s side was knocked out of the metro B north finals, losing to Parkville Women’s 5-3 in a preliminary final on Saturday.

Only two of the women’s side had played hockey before this year.

The over-35s team plays in a preliminary final on Wednesday night, while the under-14 team went through the season undefeated before losing in the grand final.

Sharma said they were thrilled with how their first season had gone.

“The main reason for forming a club was the community, they really wanted something and there is a passion for hockey.

“They can come together… We have more than 150 members in the first year.

“We as a committee are amazed by the numbers and season. We’re really happy with the decision to form the club.”
