Pet owners in Maribyrnong won’t have to pay cat and dog registrations for the next year because of hardship caused by COVID-19.

Maribyrnong council has waived pet registrations that were due by April 10, and will refund fees already paid on request.

There are currently 6582 dogs and 3047 cats registered in the municipality.

Standard fees for desexed dogs and cats would normally be $55, with some animal categories costing as much as $210.

“Our furry friends are there to keep us company during these times of physical distancing,“ mayor Sarah Carter said.

“They are our companions on walks and while we are at home.

“In response to the hardship felt by many as a result of COVID-19, we will refund any 2020-21 pet registrations which have been processed and paid for.

“Residents just need to visit our website to apply for the refund.

“We ask the community to please be patient as we process the refunds as there are a high number of pet owners in the municipality.“

Pet registrations from last year will be automatically renewed free of charge for the period up to April 10 next year.

The council is asking people whose details have changed to notify the council so it can update its records.

All new registrations, which are required for cats and dogs aged more than three months, will be free this year.
