The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Victoria.
The BOM has issued a warning for a “very dangerous thunderstorm with intense rainfall that may lead to life-threatening flash flooding” that is moving over the state including, northeastern Melbourne.
The Department of Transport has also issued a severe weather warning for motorists and commuters urging them to be vigilant as the storms sweep across the state.
The department said drivers should carefully consider the need to travel in the area.
“Drivers, pedestrians and cyclists should never enter flood water. For the sake of a few minutes extra, it’s worth finding an alternative route, rather than getting stranded,” the department said in a statement.
“Cars can float in as little as 15cm of water – that’s water the depth of an average pen.”
“Passengers taking public transport are encouraged to check for services impacted by the weather before travelling. Extra care should be taken on platforms and when boarding and getting off public transport, as surfaces can become slippery.
“Drivers should leave extra space between themselves and the car in front, as braking distances increase in wet conditions. Judging distance and speed can deteriorate in adverse conditions.
“The use of headlights is recommended to help see and be seen. Drivers should look out for cyclists and motorbikes which can be harder to see.
“If the rain becomes too heavy for wipers to cope, we suggest pulling over safely and waiting for the rain to pass.
“Where possible, parked cars should be moved under cover and away from trees and the risk of falling branches.”
