Long- awaited developmental works have started on the popular Altona Pier.
The works will be situated on the Esplanade between Pier Street and Bent Street for the remainder of the year.
The new pier is being designed to boost safety and increase access for locals and visitors at the local landmark.
The redevelopment will include a hardwood timber deck built on top of a durable concrete substructure, as well as handrails, lighting and seating to create more space.
Ports and Freight Minster Melissa Horne said the works on Altona Pier are necessary for the future of the beloved area.
“We’re getting on with these important works to safeguard the future of Altona Pier – which remains a much-loved destination for locals and tourists to the area,” she said.
“Once complete, the new pier will be safer and have more seating to create more space, as well as include an accessible low landing with views across to the Melbourne skyline and along Pier Street.”
The 310-metre-long pier will also feature a branched pier head to provide better fishing opportunities and multiple places to take in views across the bay.
An accessible low landing will offer people of all abilities the opportunity to access the water while providing new berths for boaters.
The government has invested $11.9 million in the project, which has been designed and developed in partnership with the Altona community.
Pedestrians and cyclists can continue to use the Bay Trail via a dedicated access pathway on the north side of the Esplanade, traffic management has been put in place with signed vehicle detours.
