Zombies at their fingertips as pupils go intergalactic

There will be zombies and intergalactic adventures aplenty when the children’s writing centre ‘100 Story Building’ launches its second edition of Early Harvest in Footscray this Saturday.

The literary magazine has been edited and published by pupils at local primary schools working with award-winning authors such as Sally Rippin to create an issue full of choose-your-own adventures and quizzes.

Publishing industry professionals including Sam Cooney of The Lifted Brow and Kat Muscat of Voiceworks mentored the young editors, including Ahmed (pictured), in after-school workshops that covered various aspects of the publishing process.

Early Harvest is a collaborative project developed by 100 Story Building, author and editor Davina Bell and creative program co-ordinator Emma Hewitt.

It aims to support literacy and self-confidence in young people such as 12-year-old Huz, who says he likes being part of Early Harvest ‘‘because you never waste your time or get bored”.

“That’s why I like coming here. Firstly some fun stuff and, secondly, it’s awesome.”

Early Harvest 2 will be launched from 2-4pm on Saturday at the 100 Story Building, 92 Nicholson Street, Footscray.
