The family of Altona North man Roger Bertocci, who was killed going to the aid of a pregnant woman being assaulted by her partner, has been the recipient of a spirited community effort.
The family’s garden was given a makeover as Altona Rotary teamed up with the Jim’s Group and other organisations to fulfil Mr Bertocci’s last wish – a landscaped yard in which his youngest daughter could safely play.
Mr Bertocci, 46, left behind his wife, Helen, and their two daughters, Ashlee and Brylee, now aged 15 and two.

Mrs Bertocci she was in awe at the community support for the family.
“I could see everyone put their heart and soul into making the garden just such a beautiful place for me and the girls,” she said. “It’s a wonderful area for Brylee to play and be safe in.
“I can’t wait for the flowers to bloom because she’s forever cutting little flowers from everyone else’s garden when she’s out and about, and brings them to me.
“It’ll be nice for her to do that from her own space.”
Jonathon Sporton, 22, was last month sentenced to 21 years’ jail, with a minimum of 17 years, for the murder of Mr Bertocci on December 14, 2014.
