Hobsons Bay council has been given $80,000 from the West Gate Tunnel project, for its Blue Stone Bridge Rejuvenation project.
The grant is designed to revitalise the 1880’s heritage-listed unique blue stone bridge that served for many years as the crossing over the Kororoit Creek on the main road link to Geelong.
The council said the rejuvenation of the bridge will include a structural inspection of the bridge and rectifying any structural issues, removing graffiti and treating it to try to prevent further damage, installing lighting, improving railings for safety, improving the surface to compliment work already completed by the West Gate Tunnel project and installing a historical information board.
This project will be jointly funded by the project and the council, with a contribution from Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek.
Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek said it is excited to have received the funding to rejuvenate the bridge.
“The funding will help us to clean up the graffiti on this wonderful old bridge and solar light the bridge abutments and the shared trail as it passes over it,” the said. “New signage will welcome visitors to Hobsons Bay and the wonderful Kororoit Creek environmental corridor and the community will get a look at latest edition of Geoffrey Ricardo’s ‘Sprits of Time’ artwork.
