Candidates throw hat in Maribyrnong Council election ring

Yarraville ward has attracted the largest field of candidates vying for votes in next month’s Maribyrnong council elections.

Twenty-five people have nominated for one of seven vacancies – two each in River and Stony Creek wards and three in Yarraville ward – down from 29 candidates in 2012.

Incumbent Labor councillors Sarah Carter (River), Michael Clarke (Yarraville) and Martin Zakharov (Yarraville) have all nominated, along with current independent councillor Catherine Cumming (Stony Creek).

Independents Cameron McDonald, Nam Quach and Grant Miles will not stand again.

River Ward candidates are incumbent Labor councillor Sarah Carter, former Labor mayor John Cumming, Georgia Webster of the Greens and independent candidates Ken Betts, Gina Huynh, Thuy Le, Tony Mach and Machi La.

Stony Creek ward candidates are incumbent independent Catherine Cumming, former Labor councillor Cuc Lam, Labor’s Hamsa Farah, Danny Cash of the Greens and independents Matthew Pham, Megan Darling and Elisa Huynh.

Yarraville ward candidates are incumbent Labor councillors Michael Clarke and Martin Zakharov, Labor’s Melba Marginson, Simon Crawford and Bernadette Thomas of the Greens, and independents Minh Nguyen, Lana Schwarcz, Mia McGregor, Monica Nguyen and Jonathon Goodfellow.

The Victorian Electoral Commission will send enrolled voters a postal ballot pack in the mail between October 4 and 6. Votes should be returned via the post by 6pm Friday, October 21, or delivered to the election office at 3/280 Whitehall Street, Yarraville, which is open 9am-5pm weekdays.
