It’s been three years in the making, but Yarraville Club Cricket Club has finally got to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
The club was set to celebrate the milestone anniversary to coincide with the milestone year, but COVID-19 put pay to that.
On Saturday night, the who’s who of the club gathered together to celebrate,
Darren Cain, who was one of the organisers, said they were thrilled to finally be able to get together.
“It was nearly three years ago,” he said. “We probably could have had it last year, but we didn’t want it to be a super spreading event.
“We had 200 people there. There were people who have been here from day one and 95 per cent of the current playing group was there.
“It was good to be able to catch up with all the old players.”
Cain said being able to connect all the generations together had been good to show how far the club has come in that time.
He said it was a celebration of people that have the sporting club the envy of a lot of club’s around the state.
As part of the celebrations, the club announced its first YCCC Legends in, John “Tubby” Medding, Alan Pollock and Jimmy Hassett.
Cain said all three had gone well and above at the club over the years and they felt this honour was appropriate.
The club also announced to teams recognising the best players to represent the club.
There was a team for the whole 50 years and a team for the last 25 years.
Justin Baker, Len Balcam, Emmett Bronca, Darren Cavanagh, Don McKenzie, Matthew Murphy, Michael O’Keefe, Vid Richardson. Will Sheridan, Larry Simmons, Ben Tupper and Gary Turner were named in the club’s best team of the 50 years.
