An infected worker at Grill’d in Highpoint shopping centre was among more than 100 new COVID-19 cases recorded over seven days, as the state government tightens restrictions and extends the state of emergency until July 19.

The Australian Health Protection Principal Committee on Sunday advised people not to travel to or from Brimbank, Darebin, Cardinia, Casey, Hume and Moreland “until control of community transmission has been confirmed”.

Maribyrnong has seven new cases among a total of 25, while Hobsons Bay remains at 19 with no active cases.

The Highpoint employee worked one day while infectious last week and is now isolating.

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said the main cause of more than 100 new cases in seven days was transmission in families, “where people have not followed our advice around physical distancing, hygiene and limiting the number of people you invite into your home”.

“As a consequence, the Victorian Government has announced a tightening of the rules and has reduced the number of visitors you can have in your home to five,” he said.

“Outside of the home, people can now gather in groups of up to 10.”
