Police are warning inner-west residents to be on the lookout for fake tradies after a spate of deceptions and thefts.
Footscray Inspector Tony Long said he had received reports of potentially dodgy tradies working in the Yarraville area.
In one case, a man approached an elderly victim at home saying he had noticed that the capping tiles on the roof appeared dislodged.
He arranged to return the next day to make the repair, turning up with an ‘assistant’ but without any tools.
They told the victim they required money up-front to buy supplies, leaving with several hundred dollars and returning with a few tiles.
The ‘assistant’ said he had an upset stomach and needed to use the bathroom.
Soon after he exited the house, the pair left the property and the victim found several thousand dollars missing.
Inspector Long said if apparent tradies turn up saying your house or garden needs work, never take their word for it.
“If you are unsure, have a friend or relative have a look for you – get a second opinion.”
He said if you do proceed with any work, get identification and accreditation and record all the details.
“Take their car registration number … always make sure you get a receipt for any payments and never let them have unfettered, unaccompanied access to your property.”
Inspector Long said tradespeople usually don’t go door-to-door. If you know anything about such incidents, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at www.crimestoppers.com.au
