Elevated road works planned

Footscray Road users will soon see more works rising high in the sky to install large steel structures to form the new roadway connecting the new West Gate Tunnel project with Citylink and the CBD.

A new elevated roadway will be put in place above Footscray Road over the coming weeks between Appleton Dock Road and Dock Link Road.

Two 750-tonne cranes will be installing the large steel portals, which weigh up to 450 tonnes each, by alternating works between the north and south side of the road.

The works will enable Footscray Road to remain open at reduced capacity where possible, with traffic alternating between the eastbound and westbound carriageways.

West Gate Tunnel Project acting chief executive Peter Lellyett said the new road system will help cut travel times between Melbourne’s west and the city by up to 20 minutes.

“We’re transforming travel in Melbourne’s west and anyone using Footscray Road can see that we’re making progress every day,” he said.

“We’d like to thank all road users, local residents and businesses for their patience as this important work continues.”

Footscray Road eastbound will be closed from Dock Link Road to Appleton Dock Road nightly between 8pm and 5am from Wednesday, September 7 to Thursday, September 8 and Thursday, September 15 to Friday, September 16.

It will be closed in both directions between Dock Link Road and Appleton Dock Road from 8pm on Friday, September 9 until 5pm on Sunday, September 11.

The West Gate Tunnel Project will be complete in 2025.
