Western Melbourne parents of fuzzy, furry and hairy children are encouraged to connect with other pet owners at a new group.

The Westside Pet Parents group will meet for the first time on Saturday, October 15 from 2pm to 3.30pm at the Seddon Deadly Sins Cafe in Seddon.

Group co-ordinator and Maribyrnong local Rachel Fung said the group will allow pet parents to talk about their experiences with raising a pet.

“The aim of Westside Pet Parents is to provide a space where parents and carers can meet and share their highs, lows, and practical insights with others who might be navigating similar daily experiences,” she said.

“It’s an opportunity to share tips and support, or just talk to people who understand.”

The group will also look at Estonian-American neuroscientist and psychobiologist Jaak Panksepp’s theory around the seven interspecies emotions.

Ms Fung said the relationship between a pet and their parent is a complex one.

“Humans and animals have one of the most extended and mutually beneficial inter-species relationships,” she said.

“It’s a relationship that’s also grown in complexity, as seen by the rise of enrichment toys, behavioural specialists, custom diets and mood-assisting medications.

“Sharing life with a companion animal requires more emotional resources than ever.”
