When Mia Burnham turned up for her first day of school at Footscray West Primary School last year, she added a new page to a decades-long family tradition.

Mia is at least the fourth generation of the Burnham family to study at the school, following on the heels of her father, grandparents and great-grandparents, along with a host of other Burnhams.

As Footscray West gears up to celebrate its 100th anniversary this weekend, students past and present have been reflecting on its history.

Mia’s father, Darren Burnham, said his grandfather was one of five siblings to attend the school and his grandmother was one of 10.

“My father also went to Footscray West with his brother and sister,” he said. “I attended with my siblings, and my mother worked to get the canteen up and running.”

The school, formerly known as Tottenham State School, is gearing up for two days of celebrations this Friday and Saturday.

The day will start with an art show and wrap up with a twilight Saturday night party hosted by actor, author and former school parent William McInnes. There will also be a historical video projection and music by local rock acts and student bands.

Former students are being encouraged to share school memories on the school’s website and photos on its centenary Facebook page.
