Internationally renowned street theatre company Born in a Taxi is bringing entertainment to people’s front yards during lockdown.

Every Saturday from July 18 to September 5, from 1.30-3.30pm, the troupe will be doing ’Front Yard Frolics’ across Altona North and Brooklyn. Their performances have been likened to mini street parties that are a fun, safe and socially-distanced way to stay connected to neighbours.

People can join in live and nominate to have their street included.

Born in a Taxi artistic directors Carolyn Hanna and Penny Baron said the event aimed to get community members involved.

“They’ll stay in their front yard and we’ll remain on the path, so it’s a concept that’s been created for COVID times to bring community together,“ Hannah said.

“We’re also wanting a legacy where neighbours talk to each other and establish relationships because people are coming out in their front yards to experience these happenings that we’re making.“

Baron said activities would include family dance-offs, five-minute sculpture challenges, and contests such as ’My Street’s got Talent’ and ’Fashions in the Driveway’.

The frolics were funded by a Hobsons Bay council Art Apart grant.

People are being urged to post their antics online using #FYF2020 and #artapart hashtags.
