Hobsons Bay council is marking International Women’s Day by celebrating frontline and essential workers who have worked tirelessly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Twenty hardworking Hobsons Bay women, who were nominated by their community and peers through the Hobsons Bay Inter-Agency Network, will be recognised in a roving photography exhibition held in Altona.

The exhibition, ‘COVID-19 women at the frontline – A spotlight on frontline and essential staff’ features women who work or volunteer at a wide range of community organisations such as Williamstown Community Education Centre, Newport Outlets, Volunteer West, St Vincent de Paul, Laverton Community Education Centre and the Vietnamese Association.

The exhibition will open at the Altona Civic Centre foyer on Tuesday March 8, and will then travel throughout Hobsons Bay.

The nominated women will also be recognised at the International Women’s Day Community Walk around Cherry Lake, also set to take place on Tuesday March 8.

The walk will feature a performance from Wiradjuri woman and opera star Shauntai Batzke, as well as guest speakers and creative workshops by artist Sofie Dieu.

The family-friendly event is free, and everyone is welcome to attend. Those interested should meet at the Fresno street end of Cherry Lake.

Mayor of Hobsons Bay Peter Hemphill said it was time to shine a spotlight on the significant contributions frontline women have made to the COVID response.

“Throughout the pandemic, these 20 incredible women have helped keep the community safe and connected, often in tough and challenging circumstances,” he said.

“Through the photography exhibition, social media campaign and International Women’s Day walk, we want to recognise and celebrate the achievements of all women and outstanding contributions to our community.”
