GOWEST for Midsumma

Drag performers Rex Spandex and Jesse Dean will host a Rainbow Storytime celebrating diverse families at Newport on Friday, as part of GOWEST Midsumma Festival events.

GOWEST is a coalition of western suburbs councils hosting 17 local events for Midsumma, Victoria’s annual GLBTIQ cultural festival.

Running until February 14, events include exhibitions, cabaret, performing arts, live music, ghost tours, author talks, comedy, sports activities, film screenings and discussions.

Rainbow Storytime will kick off Twilight Celebrations at Newport Community Hub on Friday, January 19.

The event, from 4-4.45pm, is free but bookings are required.

There’ll be a sausage sizzle from 4.30-6.30pm and music on the deck with young local bands from 4.45-6.15pm.

A panel of writers will share their stories about queer culture, experience and identity in an event dubbed What’s your Story? from 6.30-7.30pm.

For more information on GOWEST events, visit www.facebook.com/gowestpride/ or the Midsumma website.

Westie Queers, an LGBTI social group in Melbourne’s west, will hold its annual Big Queer BBQ at Williamstown’s Hatts Reserve on Saturday, January 20 from 5.30pm. Visit their Facebook page for more details.
