Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay residents living near the West Gate Tunnel project works are encouraged to spruce up their backyard and take advantage of a new state government initiative to create a greener west.
Applications for the West Gate Tunnel Project Backyard Planting program are now open, with eligible residents able to obtain free tube stock of plants native to the western suburbs of Melbourne, including Swamp Paperbark, Drooping Sheoak, Blackwood Wattle, Common Reed and Hopbush.
The most significantly impacted residents will also be able to obtain vouchers from a local nursery to make improvements to their gardens.
Williamstown MP Melissa Horne said the program will give away thousands of trees and shrubs.
“We want to leave a greener, better-connected west once the West Gate Tunnel Project ends,” she said.
“I strongly encourage residents who live near the West Gate Tunnel Project to apply for this initiative to improve their garden and help us create a greener and better connected west.”
Tube stock will be available to collect at designated pop ups or the project information centre at the corner of Somerville Road and Whitehall Street in Yarraville until 31 August, or until stocks are exhausted.
Applications close on Friday, August 12.
