High winds wreak havoc in Hobsons Bay

High winds have downed trees on homes and caused roof damage across Hobsons Bay.

St Clement’s Anglican Church in Central Avenue, Altona Meadows, had part of its roof ripped off by the wind, with gusts up to 74 km/h recorded at Laverton on Tuesday.

Hobsons Bay SES unit controller Craig MacCallum said several trees had come down near or on homes.

“There was a tree down on a house in Morris Street, Williamstown,” he said.

“We spent probably an hour there, cutting it up and getting it off the house.

“We had two other quite large trees at two other premises: one in Meddings Court, Altona North, and Strzelecki Grove, Altona Meadows.

“We referred them on to go through their insurance companies to get tree contractors, because they’re rather large trees – a bit big for us to handle.”

He said the SES crew temporarily secured the roof of St Clement’s after the church building sustained minor damage.

“Some of the flashing that goes from the wall to the roof, the wind had gone underneath it and started to rip it away,” Mr MacCallum said.

“We put some temporary fastings down.

“They had some sandbags and held it back into place until they could get someone out there today to have a look at it.”

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a strong wind warning for Port Phillip Bay on Wednesday.
