Residents fed up with a dangerous Yarraville intersection are calling on VicRoads to help make it safer.

Belinda Wallin said she had another close call recently, while crossing Williamstown Road at its intersection with Francis Street, on the ‘green man’ with her two young children in a double pram.

She said a driver turning right from Francis Street into Williamstown Road failed to give way and almost drove straight into the three of them.

“That whole intersection is just so dangerous,” she said. “We cross it multiple times a day to get to childcare, and we’re getting fed up with it.”

Ms Wallin said she reported the latest incident to the police, but she would also like VicRoads to take responsibility for making the busy intersection safer.

“We find people race to beat the lights; they just need to slow down,” she said. “The pedestrian crossing is the worst. ”

Ms Wallin wants flashing pedestrian lights to alert drivers concentrating on other car and truck traffic.

“It’s such a big intersection and there is no warning as such.”

Ms Wallin said queues for the slip lane can grow so long that cars will bypass the lane and try to turn left after the traffic island, again posing a risk for pedestrians crossing there.

Other nearby residents report seeing accidents and near misses at the intersection, but say complaints to VicRoads go unanswered.

VicRoads regional director Vince Punaro said there were 10 casualty crashes at the intersection in the five years to June 30, four involved pedestrians, with one of these resulting in serious injuries.
