Police hunt for man over Footscray tram double stabbing

Police have released images of a man wanted for questioning in relation to the stabbing of two men on a tram in Footscray.

Dramatic video footage emerged during the week of the moments after a man pulled out a knife and stabbed two passengers last Friday night, July 28.

Footage filmed on a bystander’s smartphone shows a man, who has been dragged from the stationary route 82 tram, lying in the middle of Geelong Road as a another person used a piece of clothing to apply pressure to what is believed to be a stab wound.

It is believed the men, aged in their 20s, were on a tram travelling north along Droop Street about 8.45pm when they were approached by another man.

The unknown man stabbed both victims before fleeing the scene on foot along Geelong Road.

A man was treated at the scene for upper body wounds before being taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

Another man was taken to the Footscray Hospital with upper body wounds, in a stable condition.

Transit Safety Division detectives have released images of a man who may be able to assist with their enquiries.

He is described as being of African appearance and was wearing a dark coloured overcoat, and a dark or black coloured beanie and scarf.
