A Braybrook schoolgirl and a young disability advocate will be among those carrying the Queen’s baton through Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay during the 100-day countdown to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Braybrook College student Linh Khong, 17, represented Australia at the Junior Taekwondo Championships in Italy in 2016, gaining a third placing, and is part of the school’s badminton team, which has twice reached the state
finals.
Other Maribyrnong baton bearers will include cyclist and Commonwealth Games medallist Remo Sansonetti and Susan Barton, a former Melburnian of the Year and a Victorian Senior of the Year finalist.
Residents to carry the baton through Hobsons Bay will include Altona volunteer Beverly Dyall, 10-year-old Taj Fazekas, Williamstown local Carol Fox and Alex Gatt, who lives with life-threatening condition spinal muscular atrophy.
The baton left Buckingham Palace on March 13 and will start its Australian journey on Christmas Day, 100 days before the Games’ opening ceremony on April 4.
Baton bearers will take more than a million steps across Australia in carrying the baton to the Games.
Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming said Linh Khong was a great role model for other students and a wonderful ambassador for the area.
“I encourage our community to support these great people in their exciting role and to share a memorable moment with the Queen’s Baton themselves at the community celebration early next year.”
Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said several of the baton bearers were local residents recognised for their achievements and contributions to their community.
“For the batonbearers, this will be a rare and unforgettable experience.”
