Pedestrian and cycling safety improvements are in the pipeline for key Williamstown routes.
Victoria Street will be upgraded in recognition of its role as a major bike connection linking schools, the Williamstown North train station, Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail and Williamstown Beach.
Traffic treatment works are also proposed for Ferguson Street in Williamstown to improve the safety of visitors to the precinct and create a calmer street environment.
Proposed plans for Victoria Street include buffered bike lanes between parked cars and traffic with the aim of reducing vehicle speeds and promoting safer on-road bike riding.
Ferguson Street works, to be carried out between Melbourne Road and The Strand/Nelson Place, are expected to include raised zebra crossings, buffered bike lanes, clearer line marking and electronic 40 km/h signs.
Mayor Jonathon Marsden said the council is committed to promoting active transport and investment in Hobsons Bay’s bike network.
“By improving walking and cycling infrastructure, we can increase our active transport options, contribute to healthier communities, lower levels of traffic congestion and decrease vehicle pollution,” he said
“Both Victoria Street and Ferguson Street are vital for linking several significant destinations in Williamstown.
“For the safety of our residents and visitors, and to facilitate active living, it’s crucial that these works take place and we want to hear from the community on the proposed treatments before construction kicks off next year.”
An online drop-in session during which people can ask the project team questions will be held via Zoom between 6.30 and 8pm Wednesday, November 17.
