Work has launched on the $37 million first stage of a four-storey building including 58 dwellings and a four by eight storey structure including 93 apartments in Spotswood.
The state government has fast-tracked the Spotswood Yards project at 571-589 Melbourne Road in Spotswood as part of a $4.2 billion fast-tracking approval push since March 2020.
As previously reported by Star Weekly, Vega One has proposed 47 apartments and 11 two-storey townhouses on a 4.7 hectare parcel of the land at 571-589 Melbourne Road as part of the first stage.
Eighty four car spaces would also be provided over two basement levels, and 13 on-street visitor spots on a new internal road, plus four car share spots.
There would also be 78 basement bike spaces and 12 ground-level spots.
The site was the former Spotswood Railway Workshops complex, with the Ways and Workshops building the sole remaining building.
VicTrack sold the land in 2018 as it was deemed surplus to transport needs.
The state government’s Development Facilitation Program has identified priority projects which meet criteria such as investment certainty, economic and employment impact, affordable housing and emissions reduction.
Other developments fast-tracked included further development of the Ramsay Private Hospital in Epping and a nine-storey building with affordable housing, office and retail opportunities in Brunswick.
