Vaccination aids return to normal life

Cr Cuc Lam

Councillor Cuc Lam

I am so proud of the way our community is responding to the call to get vaccinated and the many community groups and organisations helping to make this happen.

As well as Whitten Oval, Quang Minh Buddhist Temple in Braybrook and the Australia Light Foundation Mosque and Community Centre hosted pop-up clinics during October, which resulted in more than 3000 members of our community receiving a first dose and 769 a second dose.

The Temple and Mosque are reopening their doors in November for second doses.

A great feature of these pop-ups is the attendance of bilingual workers and interpreters who can answer questions or respond to concerns.

With this support, and the efforts of our community, we now have more than 70 per cent of the eligible population in Maribyrnong double vaccinated.

Being double vaccinated means that we can get out and about more, which is great because it gives us the opportunity to support our small businesses – both established and new – including the new bookshop the Chestnut Tree, the Swedish Baker and the new wine bar – West Footscray Wines in West Footscray.

Braybrook’s Churchill Avenue shopping district also has great places to have lunch or buy a coffee that you can enjoy by walking across the road to Aeroplane Park.

Council has also received $500,000 from the state government to help businesses expand their outdoor footprint to help with the challenges of social distancing and restrictions.

It’s available to all businesses – dining, entertainment, exercise, retail and everything in between.

The Outdoor Activation Expressions of Interest program is open until Sunday, November 21 and available on our website at maribyrnong.vic.gov.au/dining

I’ve always enjoyed the strong sense of community in our City and a great example of this is the successful Men’s Shed that operates out of a specific wood working facility at the Braybrook Community Hub.

There’s discussion about the Men’s Shed expanding and offering a range of programming for our culturally diverse community – in addition to opening to women.

I welcome the warmer weather and the opportunity to plant more trees. A state government grant has supported tree planting across the City including plantings along the Maribyrnong River escarpment in Braybrook.

As your local councillor I am always available to listen to your feedback and comments. Please do not hesitate to contact me via Cr.Lam@maribyrnong.vic.gov.au or 0429 383 099.
