Williamstown fell to an uncommonly large defeat in Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 action at the weekend, but the side is confident of hitting back in coming weeks.
Taking on Cheltenham, which was relegated from division 1 last season, the Wolves struggled to get their game going at any point as they were comprehensively outplayed in a 10-0 defeat.
Williamstown pitcher Daniel Chircop said it was a rare thing for his side to go down in such a fashion, but he was hopeful it would prove a minor blip.
“As long as I’ve been at the club we’ve been a winning side, so this was something different,” Chircop said.
“Credit to Cheltenham – they’re a good outfit and their import pitched really well for them and didn’t let any of our hitters get comfortable. We just never got into a groove all day.
“I think we’ll get some players back from now and have a really strong back half of the season. We should start firing pretty soon.”
Chircop started on the mound for the Wolves. He was far from terrible, but his mistakes were punished by the home side as it scored a run in the first inning and by the end of the third inning Cheltenham had stretched out to a sizeable lead
When the Wolves’ turn came with the bat, they never found a rhythm, with no player making it to third base all match.
The Wolves are 1-3 through the first four rounds, but Chircop said the return of key players in coming weeks would give his side the boost it needed for the rest of the summer.
“Our import is back at home for a family wedding, and a couple of our better hitters are still making their way back from the off season,” he said.
“So we’re disappointed, but we’re not 100 per cent shocked that we’re in the position that we’re in – and we’re not worried at the moment.
“The goal for the last few years has been to get promotion to division 1.
“Going into this year, we felt like we’d improved our playing list, so we’re still confident that we have it in us.”
