Sunshine for young Lions Club hero’s mission to help disadvantaged

THERE aren’t many people who can claim to have inspired the creation of a not-for-profit organisation with a five-minute speech, but Michael Sacco can.

Accepting Sunshine Lions Club’s ‘youth of the year’ award last year, the Braybrook College student said the need to help others was a fundamental aspect of humanity.

The 18-year-old’s speech inspired local leaders to form the Western Festive Activities for the Disadvantaged group (WESTFAD).

“I’ve always wanted to help people,” Michael says. ” I started as a Scout when I was eight and we were always heavily involved in the community. I think that’s a major reason I feel so passionately about the cause.”

Michael was one of eight student finalists for the state government’s VCE leadership awards, which recognise people who demonstrate exceptional leadership qualities and a commitment to community services?

WESTFAD volunteers provide social and festive activities for underprivileged people.

The team of eight, including Michael, raises money through events such as barbecues, bike rides and motor shows.

Their biggest annual event is a Christmas dinner for the community’s most vulnerable. More than 300 families have been invited this year.

It’s been a busy year for the year 12 student, who completed his VCE exams last month. Next year he plans on juggling his community work with studying biomedicine or science at Melbourne University.
