Man held on arson charges

A MAN who allegedly lit five fires in Laverton last Wednesday, including one that burned down a Scout hall, has been remanded in custody.

The Laverton man, 34, was denied bail and ordered to reappear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on December 21 on arson charges.

Police arrested him about 11.30pm on December 11 as he was allegedly trying to set fire to a parked vehicle by igniting newspapers beneath it.

He has been accused of lighting three grassfires after 9.30 that night and another large fire at the Laverton Scout hall on Railway Avenue about 10.30pm.

It took 25 firefighters about 15 minutes to bring the fire under control.
