WILLIAMSTOWN CYMS has reeled off three consecutive wins either side of Christmas to turn from a relegation-threatened outfit to one seeking a late run to the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north division finals.
The CY’s produced their best performance of the season with a 102-run dismantling of last year’s runners up Doutta Stars at Fearon Reserve on Saturday.
They were in total command from start to finish in a lop-sided one-day match.
“It’s three wins in a row, so hopefully we’re back on track,” CYs playing assistant coach Andrew Leetet told the Weekly.
“We’re starting to follow Paul’s [coach Paul Murray] bowling plans and getting some decent scores on the board. With the start to the season we had, it was all about avoiding relegation. Now we look to have done that, it’s become about putting wins together. There’s no talk of finals yet, but this weekend’s game against Westmeadows is important and if we can win it will put us back in the mix.”
The Stars were humbled for 93 in 32 uninspiring overs. They had no answer to return-from-injury paceman Andrew Walshe, who took a season-best four wickets after returning from a shoulder injury.
Leetet snared two wickets and John Gallivan three as CYs put the clamps on the Stars from the outset. The CYs cruised to victory and gained valuable late points in the process. Janaka Siriwardana entertained en route to 85. “Janaka’s a class act,” Leetet said. “If you don’t get him out early he can turn it on. He likes to play his shots; he’s good value.”
Wicketkeeper Charith Fernando carved out 35, while Billy Millar scored 25. CYs travel to Westmeadows for a two-dayer, starting Saturday, to determine the trajectory of the rest of their season.
