Wominjeka festival: Kulin nation lays out welcome

WEAVING its way through the west’s mid-summer festival frenzy is Wominjeka, meaning ‘welcome’ in the language of the traditional owners, the Kulin nation.

This citywide celebration of indigenous artistic and cultural creativity kickstarted Footscray Community Arts Centre’s annual cultural calendar last Friday.

The finale of Wominjeka will be a free performance of Dirtsong by Black Arm Band on Saturday in front of the Footscray Community Arts Centre from 7.30pm. Dirtsong uses 11 Aboriginal languages in a collection of songs and music about connection to country, memory and community inspired by the words of Miles Franklin Award-winning Aboriginal writer Alexis Wright.

■ Meanwhile, Maribyrnong’s 22nd East Meets West lunar new year festival will close off Hopkins Street, Footscray, this Sunday, from 10am.
