Australia Day honours: Former Williamstown councillor a community watchman

FORMER Williamstown councillor and Altona North resident Bernard Graham has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the community through a range of organisations.

A director of Newport Outlets Co-operative Neighbourhood House since 1993, including 12 years as president, Mr Graham was foundation president of the Probus Club of Altona North.

For about a decade he’s been the area co-ordinator for Newport Neighbourhood Watch and is president and treasurer of the Williamstown Blue Light Disco.

Mr Graham volunteers under the Independent Third Persons program, helping children during interviews or when giving formal statements to Victoria Police.

For 11 years, he’s been a community visitor for the Office of the Public Advocate, and volunteers with the Williamstown Youth Housing Group.

Mr Graham has been a Westgate Road Safety Council committee member for 20 years and with the Westgate Migrant Resource Centre for 12 years.

He is Williamstown’s Shell Companies Community Advisory Group representative.

Mr Graham served on the council from 1993-94.
