Hockey

Andrew Monte put away two goals in Footscray’s 4-1 mauling of cellar-dweller Mentone in Hockey Victoria men’s premier league. The Bulldogs can still reach the finals with a late-season run. One side sitting in the top four is Altona after it managed a 2-2 draw with second-placed Camberwell. In the women’s premier league, Altona and Footscray damaged their finals chances with losses to Camberwell and Mentone respectively.

Soccer

It was a brutal weekend for Altona clubs in Football Federation Victoria’s State League 1. Altona East Phoenix dropped all three points at home in a 3-2 loss to Western Suburbs that leaves it sitting in ninth on the ladder. It’s even worse for Altona Magic, which tumbled to third-last after a 4-1 belting on the road at Fitzroy City. In State League 2, Colin Hyland’s goal was not enough as Yarraville went down 2-1 to Sporting Whittlesea.

Netball

City West Falcons can complete a perfect season in tonight’s Victorian Netball League grand final at the State Netball and Hockey Centre.
Marg Lind’s Falcons will be odds-on favourite to eclipse the Southern Saints in the decider to complete an undefeated season. The Falcons are also swooping for a three-peat of
VNL titles.

Women’s football

Melbourne was dominant in the second AFL women’s match, outplaying the Western Bulldogs to win by 56 points in another brilliant advertisement for the women’s game. It was the Demons’ second win, following a 32-point victory last year. The crowd of 5500 at Etihad Stadium was slightly down on last year, but those in attendance were treated to a physical and skilful match. The Bulldogs’ No.1 draft pick, Tiah Haynes, ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament after the draft and could not take her part in the game.

VAFA

Westbourne Grammarians breathed life into their Victorian Amateur Football Association division 4 campaign with a 30-point win over Manningham Cobras at Westbourne Grammar School on Saturday. The Warriors’ season was at the crossroads 10 minutes into the last quarter and they left nothing in reserve, knowing a loss would drop them out of the finals chase. A five-goals-to-one last term sealed the Warriors’ fourth win of the season and moved them to within two games of the top four.
