Newport: Horses gee up nursing home residents

Memories came flooding back for many of the residents at Newport’s Southern Cross Care nursing home last week when they received a visit from two horses.

John Broadfoot, 96, was among residents who met Jack and Destiny, two horses from Reeba Equine Assisted Therapy (REAT) that regularly visit nursing homes.

REAT’s Rebecca McLennan said they evoked memories among people who once owned or rode horses.

“They bring back memories from long ago, create new ones and give the residents something to look forward to,” she said.

“Residents who have never touched horses, pat them and say how great they are. Others speak of growing up with horses.

“One resident who normally doesn’t speak told us during our visit how he drove the milk cart in Footscray and Yarraville.

“John gets quite emotional and speaks of days gone by that he spent with horses.”

She said the encounters were rich and meaningful, as horses had a keen emotional sense and were naturally curious animals.
